Cold Weather Landscaping Tips
Winter is on it’s way, so it’s time to start planning your next steps for cold weather landscaping!
It’s crucial to take care of your plants and shrubs during this time, and to do what’s necessary to prepare your lawn for winter. This is the best way to keep your lawn healthy and your plants thriving so that they can survive the frost to come.
Our goal here at Mountain View Landscapes is to help ensure your landscape is flourishing, no matter what the weather is doing. That’s why we want to share our essential…
Cold Weather Landscaping Tips
Out With The Old:
Deadhead flower stems, and cut back perennials and ornamental grasses. Be sure to also prune back the dead branches off of shrubs and trees. Have hydrangeas? Remove the dead blossoms, but keep dead-looking stalks, as these will form new buds in the springtime. Also, make sure to also cut tea roses back to about ⅓ of their height.
In With The New:
Early fall is an excellent time to plant new trees and shrubs, as the cold weather puts less stress on young plants. Plus, it’s a great time to buy, since nurseries are likely to give you a great deal!
Spread The Mulch:
Mulching in fall helps your plants retain moisture during dry winters, and protects the roots from frost. Spread 2-3 inches of hardwood shredded mulch around trees and shrubs to protect them.
Protect Your Plants:
Wind, ice and snow can dry and break your valuable plants and shrubs. Wrap your shrubs in burlap, and hide smaller plants under large buckets or pots to keep them away from the elements. Lay shredded leaves around fragile trees to help protect the roots.
Cold weather landscaping is a necessary practice to ensure your plants and shrubs thrive during the cold, harsh winter. However, doing all this work yourself can be very time-consuming. Not to mention, it’s difficult to drag yourself out of a warm home/building and into the cold temperatures to spend hours landscaping.
