Five Summer Watering Tips to Help Your Landscaping Beat the Heat
Five Summer Watering Tips to Help Your Landscaping Beat the Heat
1. Water at the correct time of day.
When it comes to landscaping, the early birds get the greenest lawns. Make sure to do your watering in the early morning, when it’s as cool as possible. Watering during the hot part of the days can damage plants and lawn, while watering in the evening makes plants vulnerable to fungus and pests.
2. Water with the correct amount.
Did you know it’s just as possible to overwater as to underwater your landscaping? Watering your garden too much or too often can result in waterlogged soil, preventing oxygen from reaching the roots and choking your plants.
Generally, your lawn should receive between 1 and 1.5 inches of water each week during the summer. Water deeply every other day for the best results and to prevent your landscaping from being susceptible to drought.
3. Conserve water when possible.
With your lawn properly watered, you want to keep it that way! One of the best ways to do that is with mulch. Applying a thin layer of mulch to the soil greatly help retain water by minimizing evaporation in the soil and preventing runoff when watering. Just make sure to not put on too much, as that can make it harder for water to go deep in the soil.
4. Less can be more.
During hot weather, there are two things to cut back on: fertilization and mowing. Too much fertilization during hot weather can actually burn your plants. Similarly, keeping your lawn longer and mowing less helps protect it from scorching in the heat of the day.
5. Utilize the proper irrigation systems.
To make sure your landscaping is watered using the optimum schedule for your plants, a custom-designed irrigation system is the obvious and most important decision.
