How To Keep Plants Alive In The Summer Heat (Part One)

Wondering how to keep plants alive in the summer heat? Our Mountain View Landscapes team has some valuable tips that can help save your garden this season!

Summer can be one of the most stressful seasons for gardeners. Not only do once-colorful plants seem lackluster this time of year, but they also tend to wither and die in the blazing heat.

This leaves many frustrated gardeners wondering… “How do I keep plants alive in these extreme temperatures?”

Luckily, all hope is not lost. And you’ll realize that too once you read these useful tips on…

How To Keep Plants Alive In The Summer Heat (Part One)

Provide The Right Amount Of Moisture

Many gardeners tend to either under-water or over-water during this time of year. And both of these actions can be detrimental to your plants’ health. That’s why drip irrigation is often the best method to ensure your plants are getting just the right amount of water. You can find these kits/parts at nearly any garden center or home improvement store.

Don’t Water The Leaves

Without being careful, many gardeners can accidentally spray water on the plants’ leaves. This can not only burn the plant, but can also significantly increase its risk of disease. When watering, make sure the water pours out directly at the base of the plant, causing the water to go straight into the soil.

Water In The AM

It’s often best to water early in the morning so the water can travel to the roots. This ensures the hydration quenches the plants’ thirst before the scorching heat arrives.

Ensure Proper Drainage. You’ll likely find yourself watering more often (or giving your plants more water than usual) during the summertime. This is because plants give off more water vapor in the summer, causing them to need more hydration than normal. Make sure your plants are in a well-drained flower bed, or in a flower pot with drainage holes. Otherwise you’ll risk drowning the plants in your attempts to hydrate them.

Pick The Perfect Spot

The afternoon sun can be nearly unbearable for plants – especially those that need only part-sun. To remedy this, place the plant in the morning sun, and then move it to a shaded area when the heat gets more intense. This will give the plants a respite from the sweltering sun and will help them thrive.
