6 Landscaping Tips to Get Ready for Fall

Fall is ahead with colorful leaves and cooler temperatures – but did you know fall is also the perfect time to invest in your landscaping? Whether your yard is big or small, getting ready now means you’ll reap the benefits all year long. With these six simple tips, you can set your landscaping up for success now and thank yourself later.

6 Landscaping Tips to Get Ready for Fall

1. Keep Watering as Needed

Many people stop watering once the cooler temperatures begin to creep in. But this means your plants may be deprived of needed moisture until the really wet winter days arrive. We recommend watering at least twice a week until winter sets in. Which may mean you need to…

2. Adjust Any Irrigation Systems

If you have a sprinkler or irrigation system installed, you’ll need to adjust the amount of water your lawn will need as the fall rains begin to arrive. Now is also a good time to think about winterizing your irrigation systems when the really cold weather comes.

3 Plant Spring Bulbs

Early fall is the time to plant bulbs that bloom in early spring, such as daffodils, lilies, iris, and tulips. Make sure to plant them in well-drained soil that will receive lots of sunlight next spring.

4. Fertilize and Mulch

It’s best to fertilize at least twice a year, in the spring and fall. However, if you only fertilize or mulch your plants once a year, fall is the time to do it. This way your landscape can have the needed nutrients to thrive all winter long, and start the spring season healthy and strong.

5. Keep Mowing

As the temperature begins to cool, your lawn will begin growing faster again. To keep wet grass from becoming matted, make sure to mow regularly and keep your lawn at about two inches in length.

6. Take Care of Those Weeds

Fall is the time to attack those pesky, perennial weeds such as dandelions and ground ivy. You can kill them by using a weed spray, or simply pulling them by hand – roots and all – after watering or a recent rain.
