Why The Fall Season Isn’t Too Late For Sod Installation

Many people mistakenly believe that sod installation can only happen in the summer. However, that couldn’t be further from the truth!

As it turns out, sod installation can occur throughout the entire growing season. As long as temperatures haven’t yet reached freezing, you’re good to go.

Of course, there are certain considerations to take into account when installing sod this late in the season. These include…

The Cool Weather

Fall is actually ideal for sod installation (as well as for completing other lawn projects). That’s because the cooler temps and occasional rainfall help prevent the sod from overheating or drying out. However, you’ll still need to water consistently. You’ll also want to use less water, since it won’t be evaporating as quickly.

Timing

Timing is everything, and that couldn’t be more true for fall sod installation. Since it takes about a month and a half for sod to develop strong roots, you’ll need to install it about 6 weeks before the first expected freeze. Once the ground freezes, the sod will no longer be able to develop its root system.

Same Rules Apply

Don’t let the cooler temperatures fool you into thinking you can afford to wait when installing sod. Much like in the warmer months, you’ll need to lay the sod 24-72 hours after harvesting. Otherwise, it can become hard and dry, and have difficulty flourishing. In the meantime, lay the sod in a shady spot and sprinkle it with water to keep it moist.

Fall can certainly be an ideal time to sod. However, now that kids are back in school, most families are far too busy with helping with homework, going to sports practices, and supporting the family to even think about sod installation.

That’s where Mountain View Landscapes can help. In just one day, our team of experts can transform a lifeless area into a gorgeous greenscape. We always measure carefully and make sure the sod fits just right. We also level the soil prior to installation to ensure a flat lawn.
