Wake Up Your Lawn With These Spring Lawn Care Tips
Wake Up Your Lawn With These Spring Lawn Care Tips
It’s finally time to be thinking of spring lawn care!
Spring has subtly been creeping in over the last month or so. Slowly, flowers are beginning to bloom, the grass is starting to grow green and lush again, and the sun is creeping out from behind the clouds (a rarity for Oregonians!).
Now that the weather is getting a little warmer, many people are wondering what they can do to help their lawn “wake up” from the winter freeze.
Well, the good news is spring lawn care is typically less time-intensive than in other seasons. And, with the help of the warm sun and spring rains, your landscape will be back to its former glory in no time!
Here’s a few things you can do to help your yard gently come back to life and restore its natural beauty:
Start With The Rake:
Although it may seem counterintuitive, raking the yard is one of the first steps to achieving a beautiful landscape. That’s because a thorough raking can help you pull up additional leaves, thatch, etc. that’s been building up over the winter. Not to mention, this will help you spot dead or compacted areas that require a little extra love.
Mow At The Right Time:
Although it may be tempting to mow or aerate your grass right away, you’ll want to wait until it’s fully green. Otherwise, you’ll risk killing new shoots before they become mature.
Test For Acidity:
Using a pH test on your yard can be very handy for checking the acidity of your soil. This will help you determine the best way to move forward with your lawn care. After all, harsh winters can often cause soil’s pH to become extremely acidic, which makes it difficult for grass to thrive. If your soil is too acidic, spreading a thin layer of lime over the lawn can help neutralize the soil’s acidity and help new grass thrive.
Consider Fertilization:
It’s important to know what type of grass you have so you can know how often to fertilize. For instance, cool season grasses typically don’t require springtime fertilization, as they’ve been holding onto it from the previous fall. However, warm season grasses will enjoy a fresh fertilization this spring, as the nutrients will help the grass thrive in the warmer weather.
Manage The Weeds:
Springtime is a great time for applying herbicide to your landscape. Doing this now will make it much easier to remove the weeds later (versus allowing the weeds to mature first). Just make sure to not overdo it with the weed killer, as this may damage new grass that’s beginning to grow.
Now some people love tending their lawn, and can’t wait to tackle those stubborn weeds and dead grass spots as soon as the weather gets above freezing.
However, we recognize that, due to busy lives and other challenges, many others turn to landscapes service companies to keep their yard in shape and updated.
